Teaching in Schools
Click here to go to Sayon’s listing as NEST Eligible Teaching Artist on NEFA’s (New England Foundation for the Arts) Creative Ground.
Sayon is interested in developing relationships with elementary and secondary schools, as well as colleges and universities, through residencies and/or teaching on an ongoing basis at intervals defined by the educational facility.
As a cultural ambassador for his people, the Malinke, and an extremely gifted musician, in terms of knowledge and expertise, not only does he love working with people and connect with them well, they love him because of his open heart and the joy he exhibits. He has an unusual ability to foster high self esteem in his students, regardless of their age or ability.
As a native of Guinea, West Africa, by working with him, students are exposed to another culture very different from their own, through music (playing and singing), language (French and Malinke, a traditional language of Guinea and Mali which can be introduced in song) and rhythmic movement (used in playing, body movement and dance). Sayon’s residencies are also an opportunity for cultural, world and social study.
All residency lengths, programs and costs can be tailored to the specific needs of the school or college. Programs are geared to school curriculum and needs. A program can consist of an introductory talk/demonstration, work with students in classes and/or intensively with a core group and with educators to extend the experience of the residency after Sayon leaves (where applicable), a final interactive performance and in some cases a workshop involving the broader based community, or any combination of these elements.
We will be happy to talk with you if you are considering opening the door to this diverse cultural experience for your students. The opportunity to be in each other's backyards opens minds and hearts. Please feel free to make inquiries by contacting Lev at 802 779 4914 or emailing:
